Overview

Ridge to Reef is a five-year project that is working in the Great River watershed to improve environmental practices
Mission

To educate residents in the Great River watershed to problems related to water quality and environmental health among other activities that improve the watershed.

Improper Disposal of Garbage in the gullies, rivers, and sinkholes leads to...

• The breeding of insects and rodents
• Odour nuisance
• Soar-eye
• Pollution of the river and sea
• Affect fish life, turtle, corals
• Affect general use of water-bathing, swimming
• Increase the cost of treatment of water
• Cause sickness-such as leptospirosis

Improper disposal of Faeces

• The use of "lada bags"
• Defecate in river, riverbank and bushes
• Defective toilet

The Effects

• Contamination of water
• Affect fish, crayfish
• People can get sick by coming in contact through bathing, swimming and drinking
• Increase in the cost of treating the water
• More chlorine is use to treat the water

Some Diseases that can be transmitted through contaminated water
Shigella
People who are infected with Shigella develop:
Diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps
Starting a day or two after they are exposed to the bacterium.
The Diarrhoea is often bloody.

Typhoid is caused by a germs that are found in the faeces of people who are sick with typhoid fever, persons who have recovered from the illness and persons who caught the germs and show no sign of being sick

How can you get it:
People can get typhoid fever by eating and drinking something that has been contaminated by faeces and urine that has the typhoid germs The symptoms are:
• Continuous fever • Tiredness • Headaches • Loss of appetite
• Constipation or diarrhoea • After seven days, red spots on the belly

Protect water sources from pollution and contamination.

To protect our own water supply

• Dispose of garbage properly
• Do your part to clean up the environment
• Plant trees
• Don’t burn the forest
• Use proper toilets
