the Montego Bay Marine Park -
FISH CYAAN DUN!

In January 2004, the Trust embarked on an ambitious programme to stem the degradation of fisheries resources within the Montego Bay Marine Park. To achieve its goal, the Trust developed an integrated strategy with three over-lapping thematic areas: Environmental Education, Institutional Strengthening of key resource users, and Participatory Natural Resource Management.

While the project successfully generated support from both the public and private sectors, its most notable accomplishment was the development of a permitting programme that promises to guide the future of collaborative fisheries management in Jamaica. Further, it has established a critical foothold within the fishing community that will serve as the basis for future interventions, including the development of alternative fisher livelihoods and gradual phasing-out of fishing within designated protected areas... Find out more about the project!

Solid Waste Reduction

In an effort to reduce solid waste inputs into the Park, the Marine Park Trust has embarked on a year-long project funded by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica. A Solid Group work during Solid Waste SeminarWaste Seminar was held in april 2004 to find "Solutions Through Partnership" to this growing threat. A working group called the SWAT (Solid Waste Action Team) was formed out of this conference and has since been involved in lobbying and educational efforts.
The Trust has been sensitizing schools to the problem of solid waste by giving presentations and providing garbage drums and compost bins. Newspaper articles, Happy Hour Presentations and events such as International Coastal Cleanup Day are helping to sensitize the wider public.

Blue Flag Campaign

Originally a European certification scheme, the Caribbean is the first region (outside of South Africa) to be eligible for this international symbol of quality and safety for beaches and marinas. As the local administrators of this programme, the Marine Park is assisted Doctor’s Cave Beach in meeting the Blue Flag criteria, which include environmental awareness programmes, adequate facilities for beach goers, safety precautions and maintenance of water quality standards. In addition to placing a Marine Park sign near the beach entrance which provides information about the importance of healthy coral reefs, the Trust also offered staff training courses in marine ecology for the staff operating on the beach. The purpose of the training was to bring attention to the importance of marine ecosystems and hence encourage proper behaviour by beach goers and staff alike.

The Trust is also assisting other beaches in preparing for the next Blue Flag season which begins in November 2005.
