Don’t Sweat it, SWAT It!
In the wake of the Solid Waste Seminar held on April 21 and 22, 2004 at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort, a working group was formed that will address the challenges of improving solid waste management in Montego Bay. This group has been officially designated as the Solid Waste Action Team (SWAT). The SWAT has begun regular meetings as of this month and conducted an action planning workshop in order to get the ball rolling!

Members of the SWAT include the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, Community Organizations for Management and Sustainable Development (COMAND), the Social Development Commission, Western Parks & Markets, St. James Public Health Dept., Garbage Disposal & Sanitation Systems Ltd. (GDSS), Parish Council, Jamaica Hotel & Tourism Association (JHTA), NEPA, National Works Agency and the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust, which acts as the secretariat.

Video Projects
The Montego Bay Marine Park is getting its video production unit back in gear. Peace Corps Volunteer Michael Loftin is heading up some new video productions to be used by the Outreach Department. Stage one of this endeavor is already underway with the filming of our monthly Happy Hours at Pier 1. These videos are made in-house and distributed to local access channels for broadcast. More projects are in the pipeline, including an updated video documentary of the Park, a how-to video on snorkeling, and special episodes about solid waste and mangroves. Look out for the MBMP on TV!
Snorkeling Club
Why make a snorkeling club? The initial reason was to provide a way for people to discover the undersea world in their own backyard. It is amazing how many Montegonians never come near the water, or even know about the wonderful corals and fish in the sea. The Park is aiming to organize a way for these people to learn basic swimming and snorkeling skills so as to see these wonders with their own eyes. Groundwork for the club has just begun and contact with swim clubs in the area is a first step to developing the snorkeling club. We will keep you up to date on our progress in the coming months.
River Bay Fishing Beach

The Montego Bay Fishermen’s Cooperative got a major overhaul! With fresh new paint and a colour scheme designed by an expert at Sandals, the fishing beach looks better than ever. The property also improved its security with new chain link fence extending along the Howard Cooke Blvd. face to connect with the existing fence. As a final touch, our own Clayton Powell created the artwork on the bridge that leads to the fishing village. Nice job! Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Happy Hour Corner

In August, the weekly Happy Hour presentations became a monthly activity of the Marine Park Trust. Now held on first Thursdays, Mr. Eric Sywak of Caribbean Producers gave a presentation on “The Merits of Volunteerism” on August 5th. He shared with the small audience at Pier One his experience in volunteering at the Shedd Aquarium in the U.S.A., and drew parallels to the benefits of volunteering in Jamaica and at the Montego Bay Marine Park. It is hoped that attendees left inspired to enrich their personal lives and build community through participating in volunteer efforts.

Coming up in September

• International Coastal Cleanup Day
• Fisheries Warden Programme Begins
• Angels Forever, Puppet Show
