Issue 4

April...what happened?
The big news for this month was the Solid Waste Seminar at the Holiday Inn. The event was a success in bringing together people to tackle the issue of solid waste. We also started off the Fisheries Training seminars at "The Meeting Place" (formerly Dragon Gym). This was our series of training for the fishermen that will eventually lead to their licensing and closing of the fishery to newcomers. The MBMP office also got a jump in its communications--we got all our computers networked, and also changed our dial-up Internet connection to ADSL. Now we have full-time, fast access for work and for our library.
Solid Waste Seminar (22nd & 23rd)
Solid Waste Seminar, crowd listens to a speaker
A large gathering of key stakeholders met at the Holiday Inn on April 22nd and 23rd for the MBMP Solid Waste Seminar. Key speakers for the event included Mr. Winston Dear of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, Councilor Noel Donaldson, Mayor of Montego Bay, Mrs. Karen McDonald-Gayle from USAID and Mr. Mark Nolan, Chief of Party for the Ridge to Reef Watershed Project. After the speakers, the participants broke into four groups to work on issues. These groups were "Awareness and Outreach," "Partnership for Management Systems," "Incentives for Solid Waste Management," and "Enforcement." All the groups presented their findings at the end of the programme. We hope that this Solid Waste Seminar is only the beginning to a lasting partnership among these agencies! Thank you to all who made this event possible!

Fisheries Programme (22nd)
The fisher educational presentations began at "The Meeting Place," formerly "Dragon Gym." Andrew Ross, Science Officer for the Montego Bay Marine Park, led the discussions on marine ecology and fisheries management during the first two gatherings. This training comprises a three part series leading to the permitting of Marine Park fishers. Under this system, only permit holding fishers will be allowed to fish within the Park's boundaries for the next five years.
