What
does the Montego Bay Marine Park do?
The Montego Bay Marine Park does a number of things, but we can divide
our duties into three main areas. These are scientific
monitoring, community outreach, and
interpretive enforcement.
The scientific aspects include fish and coral assessments, beach erosion
monitoring, water quality testing, and rescuing injured marine animals.
Community outreach involves all presentations we give to schools and
public gatherings in order to educate people about their marine environment
and environmental responsibility. Interpretive enforcement means facilitating
compliance through offender education and enforcement as needed, so
that all users can live in a sustainable way.
Is the MBMP a government agency?
No. The Montego Bay Marine Park is managed by the Montego Bay Marine
Park Trust, which is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO). Although
we ourselves do not work for the Government of Jamaica, we work closely
with government agencies in order to protect, preserve and restore
the marine ecosystem. To learn more, check our management
page.
Are there any rules or regulations
for the marine park?
Yes. Please see our regulations & responsible
behaviours page.
Is there an entry fee to the park?
No. The park does not have a specific access point or fee system.
Anywhere that you can enter the water is the Montego Bay Marine Park.
There are many places to enter the MBMP, as you can find in our Maps
section. Just remember to ask permission before entering a private
beachfront property.
Are there
any rides or attractions in the park?
Yes and No. The Montego Bay Marine Park itself
does not own or operate any rides or attractions, as we are the regulatory
agency. However, there are private businesses that operate glass bottom
snorkeling tours, catamaran rides, beachfront vistas, and a number
of other watersport related activities. Check our Links
page for more information. |
