The Montego Bay Marine Park Trust is pleased to announce the establishment of the Montego Bay Marine Park Fish Sanctuary. This new sanctuary, established by Agriculture Minister Dr Christopher Tufton in October, is designed to stem the depletion of critical fish stocks adjacent to important tourism and spawning areas.

Working in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Division, the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust began a fisher sensitizing program earlier this year, which involved visits to local fishing beaches, the distribution of flyers and advising fisherfolk on the water. In August, the Trust deployed demarcation buoys to highlight the no-fishing zone. As with all Fish Sanctuaries, no fishing of any type is allowed within the Sanctuary and violations carry stiff penalties. To learn more about Fish Sanctuaries in the Montego Bay Marine Park, please visit here. For regulations regarding the use of these areas, please read the Fishing Industry Act.
